H2S Alive Training
IRP Approved | Energy Safety Canada / Enform Certified | Oil & Gas
Hydrogen sulfide is the chemical compound with the formula H2S. It is a colorless gas with the characteristic foul odor of rotten eggs; it is heavier than air, very poisonous, corrosive, flammable, and explosive.
In Alberta, workers are exposed to hydrogen sulphide most often during drilling and production of natural gas, crude oil and petroleum products. Hydrogen sulphide can accumulate in sewers, sewage treatment plants or hide storage pits in the tanning industry. Well drillers, tunnel workers and miners may be exposed when underground pockets of hydrogen sulphide are encountered. Hydrogen sulphide is also a raw material in manufacturing.
Hydrogen sulphide is extremely toxic. Workers are exposed when they inhale hydrogen sulphide in air, and this toxic gas is quickly absorbed by the lungs. For this reason it is imperative for workers who work with or are in the vicinity of H2S to be properly trained in the hazards associated. (Source: Worksafe Alberta.)
This 8 hour course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge employees require to protect themselves in an environment where there is a hydrogen sulphide (H2S) hazard.
H2S Alive Course Objectives:
- Physical properties of H2S
- Health hazards of H2S
- Protection from H2S
- Basic rescue techniques
- Hands-on experience that includes:
- Operating a self-contained breathing apparatus
- Perform rescue lift and drag exercises
This course is applicable to any worker who is exposed to H2S during their work day which can include, but is not limited to, oil and gas, construction, maintenance, industrial and sanitary.
Enform Training Service certification, which is valid for 3 years, will be granted upon successful completion of the course.
