Details

This course has been designed to meet and exceed Occupational Health and Safety standards.

This course is applicable to any worker who may be exposed to a flammable or toxic substance that exceeds the OEL (Occupational Exposure Limit) set by OH&S.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will receive a 2-year certification in Respiratory Protective Equipment and SCBA Awareness.

Course Description

A self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, sometimes referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA), or simply breathing apparatus (BA), is a device worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable air in an "Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health" atmosphere (IDLH). When not used underwater, they are sometimes called industrial breathing sets. The term "self-contained" means that the breathing set is not dependent on a remote supply (e.g., through a long hose).

The term immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) is defined by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as exposure to airborne contaminants that is "likely to cause death or immediate or delayed permanent adverse health effects or prevent escape from such an environment." Examples include smoke or other poisonous gases at sufficiently high concentrations.

Employees are at risk of exposure to flammable or toxic chemicals that exceed the Occupational Exposure Limit. Without the use of a SCBA, irreversible or deadly health effects may occur.

This is a comprehensive 4-hour course that covers a multitude of topics regarding Respiratory Protection / SCBA Awareness.

Course Objectives

  • Different types of respirators
  • The limitations of respirator use
  • The process for selecting the appropriate respirator for a hazard
