Course Description
A loader is a type of tractor, usually wheeled, sometimes on tracks, that has a front-mounted square wide bucket connected to the end of two booms (arms) to scoop up loose material from the ground, such as dirt, sand or gravel, and move it from one place to another without pushing the material across the ground. A loader is commonly used to move a pile of material from ground level and deposit it into an awaiting dump truck or into an open trench excavation.
A skid loader, skid-steer loader or skidsteer is a small, rigid-frame, engine-powered machine with lift arms used to attach a wide variety of labor-saving tools or attachments. Loaders are also known as bucket loader, front loader, front-end loader, payloader, scoop, shovel, skip loader or wheel loader.
Heavy equipment may present a hazard at the worksite if the operators are inexperienced or untrained. Alberta OH&S Explanation guide describes the responsibility of the operator as follows: Competency can be demonstrated by operating the equipment to a level considered satisfactory by another worker who is trained in the operation of that same or similar equipment and who has been designated by the employer to assess this ability. Section 15 of the OH&S Regulation specifies what, at a minimum, must be covered in the worker’s training.
