Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions, often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore blood circulation in the event of cardiac arrest. CPR alone is unlikely to restart the heart. The objective is to delay tissue death until administration of an electrical shock to the subjects heart termed defibrillation. This is accomplished with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Of the 40,000 cardiac arrests that occur in Canada, 85% happen outside of hospitals in public places or in private homes. This makes it one of the most likely medical emergencies that you will come across. The chance of surviving a cardiac arrest more than doubles when early CPR and use of AED are administered.
In this 8 hour AED, CPR and Emergency First Aid training, you will receive an overview of first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills.
